The Ethical Flexitarian

So I’m trying out this whole vegetarianism thing. I’ve been at it a few months now.

I have a problem. I really (really) like meat.

So how can I eat meat ethically?

Some (oversimplified) reasons I don’t eat meat:

  • Industrialized agriculture creates unneeded suffering
  • Animal raising harms the environment
  • The raising and/or murder of animals for consumption is unethical

So when is consuming meat ethical?

I was inspired by another tenet of good environmental practice: reducing food waste.

When the meat would otherwise go to waste, it is ethical to eat that meat.

Person about to throw away some perfectly good meat.

Examples:

  1. Roadkill
  2. “Just before the trash” meat

“Just before the trash” meat is meat that:

  • No one else wants
  • No one would eat later

For any other meat-loving vegetarians out there, consider this as an option for you.
