The Ethical Flexitarian
So I’m trying out this whole vegetarianism thing. I’ve been at it a few months now.
I have a problem. I really (really) like meat.
So how can I eat meat ethically?
Some (oversimplified) reasons I don’t eat meat:
- Industrialized agriculture creates unneeded suffering
- Animal raising harms the environment
- The raising and/or murder of animals for consumption is unethical
So when is consuming meat ethical?
I was inspired by another tenet of good environmental practice: reducing food waste.
When the meat would otherwise go to waste, it is ethical to eat that meat.
Examples:
- Roadkill
- “Just before the trash” meat
“Just before the trash” meat is meat that:
- No one else wants
- No one would eat later
For any other meat-loving vegetarians out there, consider this as an option for you.
P.S. I’m not trying to convince anyone, just trying to lay out some thoughts. Feel free to share your own in the comments.
